Trends, Turning Points & Difference Makers

-
In every team sporting event there are three major components that determine the outcome: Trends, what’s working and what isn’t working; Turning Points, disruptions to the trends; and Difference Makers, the people who execute the trends and the turning points.
-
Using that perspective, let’s break down Friday night’s Enid High School football game against Midwest City.
-
Trends:
A trend prevalent throughout the contest was Midwest City’s ability to run the ball consistently and effectively, finishing with 309 yards on the ground. That trend was somewhat negated by the Bombers propensity for drive stalling penalties, totalling 10 for 85 yards on the night. A positive trend for the Plainsmen was their ability to consistently string together drives of eight plays or more over half of their possessions, and they were never forced into a three and out. The Bombers fumbled the ball six times allowing the Plainsmen to pounce on three of them, a prime example of a trend keeping Enid in the game.
-
Turning Points:
Despite the lopsided final score, the first half had two significant turning points while the game was still in doubt. The first, a goal line stand by the Plainsmen defense, kept the Bombers from taking a two score lead early in the first quarter. Another came when, trailing 21-12 late in the second quarter, Enid’s offense drove from their own 31 yard line down to Midwest City’s nine yard line before an untimely interception in the end zone kept the Plainsmen from cutting it to a one score lead before the half.
-
Difference Makers:
Astin Anderson rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns for the Bombers, while quarterback Preston Colbert had 229 yards passing and three total touchdowns. First among the Plainsmen standouts was sophomore Jaden Dimaracutt who had six catches for over 60 yards and a touchdown. Senior receiver Jerra Williams added four receptions including a touchdown and a long catch down to the one yard line, setting up the Plainsmen for their second touchdown of the night. Junior quarterback Mason Skrimager accounted for over 200 yards of offense and produced four Enid touchdowns while completing 73% of his passes during the contest.
-
On a night where the major turning points essentially balanced themselves out, Midwest City’s overwhelming ability to run the ball and finish drives led them to a three touchdown victory, 46-25.
-
Midwest City 8-1 (6-0) host Stillwater 8-1 (5-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night with the district championship on the line.
-
Enid 3-6 (1-5) hosts Putnam City 6-3 (3-3) Friday 7 p.m. looking to end their season on a high note with a victory during Senior Night at D. Bruce Selby Stadium.
