At 8:20 am on Wednesday, February 15th, the Enid Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 568 N. 7th Street, a single-family rental property owned by Mr. Jesse Tapp. Initial reports indicated a male occupant trapped inside the burning structure. Upon arrival, responding units reported heavy smoke coming from the single-story wood-frame structure and flames from a front window. Two occupants, Denise Hutchison (59) and Doug Hutchison (38) had escaped through a rear door on the south side of the home with their two dogs. Doug Hutchison used a cell phone to call 911. Fire & rescue crews from Stations 1, 2 & 3 responded to the scene, with first units arriving at approximately 8:25. The Hutchisons advised firefighters that Marion Hutchison (59) was still inside and they had been unable to reach him.

Fire Captain Cory Weber and Firefighter Matthew Toews entered the structure from the rear entrance to search for Mr. Hutchison while Captain Chad Mantz and Firefighter Matt Nels entered the front of the structure and began fire suppression with a charged hoseline. Firefighter Matt Nels found Mr. Hutchison in the floor of the kitchen. Weber & Toews then assisted Nels & Mantz in removing Mr. Hutchison from the structure. Life EMS personnel were available at the scene and took over care of Mr. Hutchison upon his removal.

The Hutchisons were transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center where Denise and Doug were treated for smoke inhlation and released. Marion Hutchison was treated for thermal burns and smoke inhalation and admitted to I.C.U. where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

Fire suppression personnel were on the scene until shortly after 11:30 am to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished. The fire originated in a sleeping area in the front of the structure used by Mr. Hutchison and was likely accelerated by medical oxygen in use at the time. Due to the extent of damage, a source of ignition could not be determined.
-
Value of the structure is estimated at $30,000. There was extensive fire damage to the room of origin, adjacent rooms and attic space, with smoke damage throughout the remainder of the structure. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
