He grew up on the family farm seven miles west of Tonkawa. He attended the one room Pratt Center School, Tonkawa High School and graduated from Lamont High School. When World War II broke out, he answered the call. After completing training at Fort Hood, Texas, he boarded a ship to the Philippines where he served for two years in infantry and finance. Upon his return to Oklahoma, he went on a double date and met the love of his life, Lovina Ruth Nolan. They married on Oct. 16, 1948 in Oklahoma City. As they started their family life, he went to work as a parts and service manager for various Ponca City car dealerships. He spent 27 years in that profession and another 27 years as an award winning area representative for Curtis Tool Company. Gordon and Lovina were very involved in their sons lives, mentoring them in scouts and sports. He was instrumental in the founding and development of the Ponca City Lake Association where he and his family spent many happy years. In later years they enjoyed traveling to visit relatives and friends. They were long-time members of the Chapel Sunday School class at First Christian Church.
