ENID, Okla. - Enid, Oklahoma has at least one Olympic connection this time around. Pat Camp Rainey is one of the proudest grandparents on the planet! Her grandson, David Plummer, won a Bronze medal in the 100m backstroke with a time of 52.40s.
-
The Men's 100m backstroke final was broadcast Monday, August 8 in prime time. Plummer was in lane 5 next to fellow American Ryan Murphy, who won Gold with a time of 51.97s. Xu Jiayu of China took home the Silver medal with a time of 52.31s.
-
Plummer was born to parents Dan and Kathy Plummer on October 9, 1985 in Norman, Oklahoma and graduated from Westmoore High School. A former Minnesota student-athlete Plummer is a World Championships medalist and a 14-time NCAA All-American.
-
In 2016 he finally became an Olympian at the age of 30 after the disappointment of missing the selection in 2008 and 2012. At the trials in Omaha, Plummer and Murphy turned in below record times. The pair defeated Olympic champion Matt Grevers to qualify for the trip to Rio.
-
What made Plummer try that third time? What did he do when confronted by his worst fears? In his career he has come across two answers:
-
One: Maintain perspective on where you are, where you have been and what it took you to get there.
-
Two: Believe.
-
In an article titled "Belief", Plummer says, "But to truly believe yourself capable of something that not only you, but no one has ever done must take something amazing. A deep-seeded belief and sense of self worth. A confidence that borders on irrationality. A desire that burns the soul."
