Chisholm Elementary School Bond Issue

Bond issues were approved in April 2006, October 2009, and April 2012. Those bond issues allowed for many capital improvements to our district which have benefitted students in a variety of ways. In 2008, the sinking fund millage rate was 14.16. The current millage rate for the sinking fund is 12.69. With the passage of this bond issue, the sinking fund millage rate would be approximately 18.54 for the first year. One mill represents approximately $12.50 per year in additional taxes on a $100,000 home. Approval of the propositions would be a 5.85 mill increase the first year resulting in additional taxes of approximately $6.09 per month on a $100,000 home.

After careful consideration, the Board of Education voted to hold a Special Bond Election on September 10, 2013. With the passage they will now be able to construct a new elementary school facility. The facility will address the recent heightened concerns of security and will include a safe room for tornadic weather conditions.

The current facility had become a chronic maintenance problem. They routinely spent thousands of dollars to repair the roof, plumbing, heat and air, as well as the aging electrical wiring serving the building. In the past two years, they had several electrical issues. Two of which resulted in a building evacuation and the fire department being called to the scene. The age of our current facility has caused many of our patrons and parents to question our security and our ability to maintain a safe environment for children. A newly designed facility will allow the school to enhance their security measures. Their current elementary facility does not have a tornado shelter. The new facility will provide a tornado shelter that could be utilized by the students during school hours, and the community would be able to access the shelter during other periods of severe weather. Additionally, the new facility will double the size of the current cafeteria. Due to the existing cafeteria’s small size, only one grade level could be served lunch at a time. The new facility will provide updated food preparation equipment as well as much more efficiency in serving students in a timely manner.
