ENID, OK - Mayor George Pankonin announced today the two recipients for the 2019 Enid Walk of Fame. While utilizing the City of Enid social media tool Facebook Live, Mayor Pankonin announced the names of Owen K. Garriott and William E. “Bill” Shewey as the honorees for 2019.

Owen K. Garriott was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and went on to become an American electrical engineer and NASA astronaut, who spent 60 days aboard the Skylab space station in 1973 during the Skylab 3 mission, and 10 days aboard Spacelab-1 on a Space Shuttle mission in 1983.

Bill Shewey has deep roots in Oklahoma and moved to Enid to join Central National Bank as a senior vice-president in 1978. For 32 years in Enid, Shewey volunteered his time to countless community organizations and was the mayor of Enid for eight years.

The annual ceremony recognizing the nominees is slated for Saturday, September 14th at 9:00 am. The Walk of Fame lobby is located in the Stride Bank Center convention hall at 301 S. Independence Avenue.

According to Mayor Pankonin, “These inductees have made significant contributions to the Enid community. Their life-long philanthropic endeavors have allowed us to enjoy many quality of life benefits. Pankonin added, “During their lifetimes, both individuals have brought attention to our community due to their selfless contributions in their respective careers.”
