Where To Find Good Ice

ENID, Okla. - It's a subject that many people never think about. What kind of ice is in my cup? For others, it's an obsession. Many people pick a restaurant simply by what kind of ice they have. This page will continue to be updated.
-
Having good ice in your cup can make or break your drinking strategy for the day. If you have the right kind of ice, it mixes well and absorbs your beverage, it will last just the right amount of time and most importantly it can easily be chewed on when needed.
-
Didn't know there was a wrong and right kind of ice? I'll try to break down the different kinds of ice and end the article with some places to find great ice.
-
Ice Cubes - These are basically the hard square cubes we used to create in our ice trays. These cubes come in ice bags and melt very slow, They are very hard to chew.
-
Half Cube - You'll find these cubes in many fast food restaurants. They are easier to chew than cubes but not fun to put in your mouth. They also melt slow and do not mix well with the beverage.
-
Small Cubes - These are the smaller square cubes that have that hollowed area on one side. They are fun to stick your tongue in but not good for much else.
-
Crescent - These are also popular in restaurants. They are flat on one side but rounded on the other. If you like loud crunching and hurting your teeth these might be the ones for you.
-
Gourmet - You'll find these at bars and fine restaurants. They are hard and crystal clear cylinder looking shapes. These are very slow melting and not anything you'd want to chew on.
-
Chunks - These are random sizes and look like little, flat ice bergs. You'll find this type of ice in ice bags and the stand alone ice machines. This ice is frozen in sheets and breaks apart in an auger. Usually to big to chew on and melts slow.
-
Flake - Also called shaved. This type of ice is actually great. It's the softest out of all of the types listed. It's so soft and thin it could be used for snow cones. That's the downfall of flake ice, it sticks together and clumps. Great to chew on but melts too quickly.
-
Nuggets - There is a difference between a nugget and a pellet. Many people mistake nugget ice for pellet ice. There is a very slight difference. A nugget looks like a nugget. It's a little more square, a little harder and slightly larger than pellets. In a pinch this is the ice to go. That is unless there is pellet ice.
-
Pellets - The cream of the crop! Pellet ice is the ice that is searched for all across the country. It is more cylinder and looks like it could have dropped out of a drinking straw. Sonic is most likely the #1 drink stop because of their ice. (Note: Some Sonic restaurants use pellet while others use nugget, be careful). Pellet ice absorbs the beverage making the chewing of the ice enjoyable. It melts as the drink warms and doesn't seem to leave a watery drink at the end. This is my favorite ice to chew although flake is softer. It's a drier ice and does not clump.
